Small Businesses Are You Missing The Boat When There’s Bounty To Be Had?

Small businesses have faced stormy waters due to the corona virus pandemic.

Independent operators, solopreneurs, and ‘mom and pop’ outfits are the lifeblood flowing through our communities.

In Kelso, a beautiful town in the Scottish Borders by the Tweed, we are lucky to have a thriving high street where small, locally owned businesses hold their own amidst larger chains like Boots, Greggs and Fatface.

This variety of independent shops is what gives our town its character. It helps keep the local economy going and gives our residents a vibrant town centre, greater sense of community, and keeps visitors returning year on year.

But then Covid-19 struck and like everyone else we were put into lock down.

The big boys– the supermarkets - of course have flourished.

Thankfully, some of our independent shops have been able to keep going- our local wholefood shop and both butchers have remained open. The bike shop has never been so busy. In a neighbouring town, a local pet shop owner has had a particularly good year.

Food, exercise, pets... all markets that are recession proof. So, there are some winners in this.

But many more losers, particularly those in hospitality. Many restaurants and pubs will simply not be able to open again until late summer. And even then, with restrictions.

I have been impressed by one publican who has come up with creative ways to keep going, through offering take-away and doubling down on promoting his recently opened gelataria.

We are plunging into recession. Many businesses will fall victim. But there are opportunities for those brave buccaneers, who are creative in their approach.

It will be those who take note of which way the wind blows and the gumption to work hard on their businesses who will not only survive but thrive.

And that includes doubling down on your marketing systems, me hearties.

If you haven’t taken the time to refresh your marketing copy during lock down, don’t let the opportunity sail on by. Turn the tide on poor sales by transforming your so-so copy into sparkling content that builds relationships with your customers, draws them in and gets them wanting to spend their precious dinero when we finally burst from our bubbles.

And maybe if you have found yourself rudely awakened by the fact that your job wasn’t as secure as you thought and want to create your own small business, I am here to offer you my copywriting services where I take the time to craft compelling copy that will help you sail into a brighter future.
